Fun with the Fire Service

Today we had a very exciting morning with the Fire Service.

It started with a safety talk, where we learnt a song about how to be safe with matches and lighters.

We burnt some of our Tudor houses to act out the Great Fire of London.

We then took turns squiring the fire hose to try to knock over the cones.
But the most excting thing was to get into the fire engine and pretend to be real fire fighters.

What an amazing way to spend a morning.

Next ..

We had to find something natural to get into Boggit Land. We then searched for Boggits and made our own Boggits out of clay and natural meterials. The best thing was we were allowed to take our Boggits home.

Enterprise Treat Day

What a treat filled dayAfter all their hard work with the ‘Grow a pound’ challenge the Year 5 children decided their treats would begin with a morning at the Lido.

After all that swimming we were ready for lunch, and what a treat we had in store, fish fingers, sausages, burgers, all rounded off with a healthy portion of …….chips!! Well it was a fun day out.

Not quite satisfied with just a main course we headed to Kaspas for a well deserved pudding. Well, we had done all that swimming.

All Year 5 had an amazing day. They each had their own budget and had to work out what they could afford as well as being responsible for looking after their money. The remaining money will go to a local charity, as yet to be decided. We have all learnt that working hard brings its own rewards. Well done Year 5 for being a fantastic bunch of children who really embraced the challenge. You did ssoooooooo well, we are all proud of you.

Victorious Viking Day

What an exciting day we had today, all dressed as Vikings we were given our mission to make a long ship to send our brave and courageous leader, Eric, to Valhalla his final journey to the gods. To do this we need to build a Long ship fit for a king…

We measured, sawed, painted and made fabulous boats.
After lunch we processed to Forest Schools where the fire was ready to take Eric to Valhalla.

We have had an amazing Viking day.

Year five’s Super Humanities Day 4th July

Today was a blast!!!!! We had a great opportunity to visit Bourneside and experience life at secondary school. Our journey began in the lecture room, where we were taken through the events of the day.

We were split into two different groups including two other schools, and then our inspirational tour of the school began.

We looked around the Art block, saw the sports hall, had a look at D&T rooms as well as the highlight of the tour – the dining area.

We then had a lecture from a University of Gloucestershire about philosophy and then had a talk by a University lecturer on American History and the history behind the 4th July, American Independence Day.

After lunch we had a lecture about university and geography.

We had an amazing day and a real insight about a day in the life of a secondary school.

Thanks to all the staff at Bourneside and the University Lecturers, we can’t wait to start Year Seven!!

From plays to peddling….

What a busy day for Class 11 on Friday.

Class 11 and 12 preformed their own version of a Viking Saga. We were wowed with music, dancing, consumes, face paints  and amazing acting. As well as superb directors, stage crew and props managers. A real treat on a Friday morning.

As well as this there was our sponsored event to raise funds to support Mrs Collins’ and Mrs Witcomb’s night bike ride next Saturday for Women’s cancer charities. We had great fun riding in the dark with disco lights and music to help,us through the ride. We didn’t quite meet the challenge of beating 100k but good fun, and a bit so sweat, was had by all.

The day was finished with chocolate and popcorn! (Reversible and irreversible changes.)

Skills Zone and Torilla making.

We started the week with a visit to Skill Zone in Gloucester where the children were faced with different situations and had to think about what they would do, a test of their common sense and thinking about safe and unsafe situations.

We then began our Maya Street Food project by taste testing wraps. Later on in the week we made our tortilla wraps and made protypes to see if our ideas worked and taste tested them to make sure they would appeal to the children in school

We prepared the filling in the classroom and were ready to go to market. Signs were made to name the wraps and to list the ingredients. We sold the wraps at morning play. It was almost a sell
out we raised approx £50 for a  Charity for Maya school children.

A Very Busy Week!

This week has been a very busy week in school. We have had art week, where the children have created their own glyph using the research done as homework as inspiration. We learnt about different types of glyphs and their meanings. After creating their own glyph the image needed to be transferred onto a tile using a compass to create dots and then printed onto paper. As we used two colours the printing needed to be done twice.

On Tuesday afternoon Year 5 walked to the Ladies College to see an amazing science show called ‘Gases in the air’.They had a brilliant time, and hopefully learnt a lot too!
Wedndeday was sponsored gallop day, and what a lovely sunny morning we had, the weather was perfect. The children enjoyed running around the course. The favourite part was the water jump where water was thrown at the children as they ran through.

Finally Friday the hall was festooned with amazing art from across the school. With a theme of modern and ancient civilisations the whole school showed what incredible artists St James children are. We all hope you enjoyed it.
